Probably dumb to post this here, but my phone number is damn near identical to a   police non-emergency number, and I get all sorts of voicemails about missing items , issues with relatives , and in one case a potential kidnapping. Yesterday I got two voicemails from a “congressman” in PA; an irate one about a welfare check on father-in-law, and then another with 2 or 3 minutes of pocket noises and background conversation. I almost always call them back to tell them they’ve got the wrong number, but most of these issues work themselves out by the time I respond.

My phone at home kept getting calls for a person with my last name from collections agents for a long time.

My office phone used to belong to a tech in biomaterials who apparently also had bad credit, because I kept getting calls from collections agents for him to that number for my first half dozen years here.

So, I kinda feel your pain.

My wife kept getting calls for a specific person. Then she flipped her lid when she went to a store, gave them our rewards number (we had $20 in points, or something like that) to find out they had been used. Ends up it was a local attorney that didn’t want to give people his real number, so he made one up (that was one digit off his number) and started using it everywhere. My wife has had her number for 20+ years, he started doing this the past 5 years or so. Thankfully, after she called him, he’s stopped using what he thought was a fake number.

We used to have the number that had belonged to the local college’s library main desk for the 20 years prior. 3-5 calls a day for 2 years, they never slowed down because who really calls the college library more than once in their college career? As a 13-year-old, I would entertain their requests for a specific book, make them hold about 20 seconds, then say “No, sorry, we actually just burned that one.”

If the internet has solved anything, hopefully that person is getting almost no calls anymore.

Our number was one digit off from the local Casino/gas station/fried chicken place. You never get tired of people asking if we found their missing wallet or if the chicken is ready.

that is some investigative work done. Typically places shouldn’ t be giving out personal information for other customers.

Also, i heard a rumor attorneys make some decent money (I mean even Jimmy McGill did) so they shouldn’t have to resort to coupons and rewards cards. I guess it’s a frugal thing to do but still.

Sorry, your honor. I am tardy this morning. I was unable to locate a current coupon for gray po upon honey mustard on sale.

Thank you for calling non police non emergency number. If you require police, non emergency line , check the number ( you are off by a digit) and try again. If you need help, please dial the operator.

I’m sure it was the typical “Can I have your phone number” clerk question at the register, he gave the made up number to them, and when they responded with my wife’s name, he said no, and they “corrected” it with his name/address.

When she’d get voicemails for the guy (he’d even make appointments for haircuts, massages, etc using my wife’s number) we finally got his full name one time. Quick google-fu found the guy and his name, and discovered his phone number was one digit off. At the time, we figured it was an honest mistake, or misread handwriting, not him doing it intentionally!

The last place I worked assigned me a cell phone with a number that the phone company had apparently last assigned to someone in a nearby community who was in all heaps of legal problems. I kept getting phone calls from debt collectors, attorneys offices, and various law enforcement agencies. I Googled the guy’s name and came up with a local address where he had lived, and a few hits for some arrest records and court appearances, but I never pieced together the full story of everything he was mixed up in.

Anyway, I had always assumed that phone companies would leave an old number out of circulation for a decent period of time before reassigning it to someone new, but, apparently there’s no waiting period anymore.

I’m lucky not to get any collection calls for people, but I’ve had my number for at least 15 years.

I kept waiting for someone to ask about Fahrenheit 451.

Or maybe Mein Kampf...

(I was an elementary/ middle school library assistant for 3-4 years as a kid -- that was my favorite elective. Seriously underappreciated job.)

I feel like if you’re calling the non-emergency number about a potential kidnapping, you must not like the victim very much.

A while back I had a roommate who had a number one digit off from the local Domino’s. He got sick of explaining that he wasn’t Domino’s every Friday at midnight so e ventually he just started taking orders for pizzas and making up prices and delivery times.
